Roslund, Prestage & Company Accounting Firm

Customer Story

Busy, full service accounting firm Roslund, Prestage & Company loves that their scanners don't break

Don’t spend time fixing problems that aren’t yours

Roslund, Prestage & Company values longevity. When the firm finds a technology, a tech gadget, or a software product that works really well, they remain loyal to it—for decades.

1986—that’s the year the Alma, Michigan accounting business began using PFU America, Inc. scanners. Recently, they’ve tested out the fi-8170.

The full service finance group handles every aspect of accounting for businesses, serving clients both in-person and virtually through their online platform. As long-time customers, they have valued not wasting time getting up to speed or fixing equipment.

“I don’t know that I’ve ever made a support call to you” observes Doug Hoard, CPA and senior partner. Hoard says, “We’ve not had any driver issues. We don’t have any firmware updates.”

As a partner for over four decades, Hoard notes firmware update requests typically end up on his desk, which take time and attention, and sometimes missed dinners, too.

Customer feedback like Hoard’s is intrinsic to developing cutting-edge scanners. As with all new products, designers and engineers developed the fi-8170 over a period of years, with the goal to exceed expectations and user experience for office scanners.

That’s been true of Hoard’s experience.

He says the only flaw he finds is of his own making, not the scanner’s. Common human-errors, such as misfeeds due to stapled documents, are solved with patented staple detection sensor technology and controls. From skewed image sensors that stop the scanner before a document is damaged, to acoustic sensors that recognize when a staple is present, the fi-8170 innovates desktop scanners with feeders for better experience.

“It's just a great product. They don't break.”

Benefits

No huge learning curves, optimized for speedy start-up

In fact, the accounting group has used the same five scanners for over a decade, and Hoard appreciates the long shelf-life and ease.

“We live and die by our scanners,” he asserts. Hoard estimates that the busy firm processes over 5,000 tax documents a year, or an average of 50 a day.

“There’s no learning curve,” Hoard notes of using the fi Series scanners. “We plug them in, and hook them up with a new employee and say ‘there you go,’” he says, referring to the ease of adoption with the high speed scanners.

Likewise, there’s plenty he appreciates about the fi-8170 scanner, specifically:

  • Easy, automatic document rotation
  • Feed accuracy
  • Fast, double-sided color scans

Start-up time for the 8170 scanner is also optimized. The firm needs to be able to scan fast—without lengthy start-up waits—when processing documents for in-person clients. “Wake-up from sleep” optimization is a plus to financial document scanning during busy tax clients. “I’m a heavy technology user…We need technology. We need speed. We hate to wait,” Hoard says.

Roslund, Prestage & Company values investing in talent. Each employee has a dedicated desktop scanner for “arms-reach scanning” and workflows.

Quiet-scanning and "arms-reach workflows"

The compact fi-8170 is a quiet desktop scanner that can be positioned in your work space because of its quiet, innovative feeding technology.

The partner says the firm values investing in talent and in a better client experience. Each employee has a dedicated desktop scanner for “arms-reach scanning” and workflows. “That would be unacceptable to me if I had to walk someplace (to scan),” Hoard contends.

The fi-8170 is exceedingly quiet, designed for front desk usage and client-facing business. The team can more efficiently serve clients, both in-person and in real time, with dedicated, fast scanners. “They’re not noisy at all. My printer is way louder than my scanners in terms of noise in my office,“ Hoard laughs.

As part of their workflow, the firm also creates searchable documents. “You need a clean image to make the (document) searchable,” Hoard says. The fi-8170 offers optical character recognition (OCR) for easier search and retrieval.

Microsoft compatibility is a key benefit

The senior partner says it’s important to note that the long-term compatibility is surprisingly consistent.

“I’ve noticed that our older scanners are working on Windows 11,” says Hoard. PFU America, Inc.’s “Service and Support Team”, a part of the engineering team, gathers comprehensive data to study ways to make scanners more reliable over a longer period of time. That underpins Hoard and his team’s experience, employing older models reliably for over a period of many years.

“They’re just a great product, they don’t break,” Hoard asserts. While he’s enjoyed using the same, older models for years, he was surprised the newer fi-8170 could best them. Hoard looks forward to the new features and the same great experience with it.
