Golf Simulators: The Ultimate Guide to Virtual Golf

Learn about essential equipment, how projectors affect image quality, and more

Golf simulators are a great way to unwind with friends or get a few rounds of practice in when you can’t make it down to the links. And they’re growing in popularity, as 6.2 million Americans played a round of virtual golf in 2023 alone.

This explosion of interest means many newcomers are looking for ways to build a golf simulator for themselves — and we’re here to help. If you’re looking to start your own business or just want to practice at home, our guide will give you all the info you need to get started.

What you need to build a golf simulator

There are simulators out there that cater to golfers of all stripes. It’s easy to spend thousands (or tens-of-thousands) of dollars on the best possible gear to create the ultimate simulator, while tinkerers and hobbyists can scrape together a solid DIY solution for under a grand.

Whichever route you choose, there are a few pieces of equipment that any fully-functional golf simulator will need:

  1. Golf simulator software drives the experience. It can run on a computer or tablet, and produces virtual driving ranges and courses to play on. The software feeds into the rest of the hardware required to make the simulator work.
  2. A projector displays the simulated image from the software onto a screen.
  3. A launch monitor observes how you hit the ball into the screen, calculates data like swing angle and velocity, and sends that information back to the software to display the outcome.
  4. A screen and enclosure to drive golf balls into. Screens are made from a durable material designed to take repeated abuse, and the enclosure ensures that golf balls won’t fly outside of the designated area.

Golf simulator setup considerations

Before you pick up the gear to start building your golf simulator, there are a few things you need to keep in mind to ensure the best possible experience.

  • Room size: At a minimum, you need to make sure that there’s enough room to complete a full golf swing comfortably. A golf simulator space that’s 9’ high by 9’ wide with around 18’ of depth should provide more than enough room for a single golfer, but you may want to consider a larger space if more people are going to play.
  • Lighting: Darker rooms provide a more immersive experience, though it may be difficult to see the ball or safely move around the room without a proper lighting system. Adding a spotlight over the golfing area and sconces along the wall can provide sufficient lighting on the tee and surrounding areas without washing out the screen.
  • Screen: Golf drives can easily reach speeds up to 100mph. A durable screen made for golfing simulators will provide you with a quality image without succumbing to rips and tears from repeated abuse.

How your projector affects golf simulator image quality

While the choice of screen, software, and launch monitor all have a hand in contributing to the overall quality of your golf simulator, image fidelity is largely a result of which projector you choose.

This is for a few reasons. First, a projector’s brightness will determine how visible the image is under different lighting conditions. Brightness is measured in lumens — the higher the lumen count, the brighter the image a projector can produce. If you can create a dark enough environment for your golf simulator, you may only need a projector with a lumen count between 3,000 and 4,000. If the only available space is near an open window or you need to have the lights on, your projector may need more lumens to display an image of similar quality.

Contrast ratio also plays an essential role in determining how easy it is to make out fine details within the image. A high contrast ratio means white colors are much brighter than dark colors — handy when trying to see where your ball landed after a long drive, especially in a brightly-lit room.

Then there’s the potential that your projector can introduce game-ruining shadows. Projectors blast images out onto the screen as large beams of light, and any obstacles in the way can cause silhouettes to appear on the screen and block out critical details, even during your golf swing. Either make sure the projector has a clear path to the screen, or consider using a short-throw projector. These devices can produce massive, high-quality images even when mere inches from the screen without sacrificing viewability.

Where can you build a golf simulator?

Even though golf simulators have highly specific equipment needs, you have a lot of leeway in how you configure them. You can fit one almost anywhere, even if space is at a premium. Here are just a few places you can liven up with a few rounds of virtual golf:

  • The office: Setting up a golf simulator in an unused meeting area or the break room can give employees a chance to unwind while building relationships between team members and boosting morale.
  • Pro shops and training facilities: Customers can try out new clubs before they buy, get feedback on their swing from trained experts, or even pay for a few rounds just for fun.
  • Entertainment centers: Add a golf simulator to your assortment of arcade games and other amusements, or create a dedicated center for casual players and enthusiasts to hang out and play.
  • At home: A spare room or unused space in the garage can be converted into a solid golf simulator setup with some ingenuity and a little bit of elbow grease.
